Measles is an extremely contagious viral infection that is acute, i.e. occurs suddenly, and is easily transmitted. For this reason, people who have caught measles must stay at home. Measles is not a harmless illness that only affects children; adolescents and adults with insufficient immunisation protection can also catch measles. Measles is transmitted via droplet infection from person to person when someone talks, sneezes or coughs. As with all so-called childhood diseases, measles is more severe in adults who are also more likely than children to suffer complications. A vaccination protects you – and others too!
